A fun opportunity has arisen for members of the local community to plant trees and shrubs in the Jubilee Community Arboretum at Cirencester Park in memoriam to honour Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, while creating new parkland for the enjoyment of all.
Taking inspiration from the historic Grade I listed parkland, The Jubilee Community Arboretum at The Old Kennels, Cirencester Park will be planted as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy; it will include a mix of parkland species including broadleaved and conifer trees and shrubs.
The Queen’s Green Canopy is a nationwide initiative to mark the Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Extended to the end of the planting season (March 2023), it aims to create a living legacy and tribute to Her Majesty. It is also an opportunity to bring communities together to plant in areas that will benefit future generations.
Cirencester Park, part of the Bathurst Estate, has long been a place for visitors to enjoy the restorative powers of being outdoors surrounded by natural environments. By planting a tree in the new arboretum, volunteers can learn more about the Park, its trees and wildlife from those who work there, as well as to contribute to a new chapter in the Park’s history.
Situated in former paddocks, the new arboretum will be open daily and easily reached from The Old Kennels, close to the new dining hub Roots + Seeds Kitchen Garden and a nature-inspired play area by specialist designers Earth Wrights, due to open Easter 2023.
In addition to community planting sessions, Cirencester organisations and businesses are supporting the initiative by donating and planting ten specimen trees. Additionally, St James’s Place will contribute to the spades and tools that will pass to community groups, ensuring the benefits of the initiative extend beyond the Jubilee Community Arboretum.
Members of Cirencester’s community are invited to take part in hourly planting sessions on Saturday 18th February from 10.00am to 3.00pm. A fun half term activity for all.
